About Wing Chun

Most people are pleasantly surprised by their first encounter with Wing Tsun. The techniques and training methods are quite far removed from the common perception of martial arts training, and certainly very different from what can be seen in kung fu movies.

Legend has it that the style was invented by a women to over come a stronger male enemy and Wing Tsun has continued to evolve as a "soft" style of kung fu, meaning that we never try to beat our opponent by using strength to overcome strength. Whilst learning to "let go of your own strength" can a be tricky task to begin with, the end result is a relaxed and fluid (but surprisingly powerful) system of kung fu that can enhance your confidence, as well as your fitness and health (two very different things) and give you increased knowledge of your own body and mind.

Wing Tsun also differs from most modern styles because it is a martial ART not a martial SPORT. The classes are run in a relaxed friendly manner but with an emphasis on good effective martial skill and proper application rather than point scoring or submission techniques. These all have their place, but we try to teach Wing Tsun with minimal "watering down" of what was once an art created for life or death situations.
